Photogenic Getaway

I want to capture unique spots that inspire at first sight.

The route begins at the Castellum Fractum archaeological site and the Church of Sants Metges in Sant Julià de Ramis, offering a unique combination of archaeology and sweeping views over the Girona plain—an ideal place to understand the relationship between landscape, history, and territory.

The journey continues towards the banks of the River Ter, where the Monastery of Santa Maria and the Castle of Cervià de Ter stand as witnesses to the medieval past, set within a landscape that blends architecture, history, and rural life. Nearby, the Vinyals power station in Flaçà provides a striking industrial counterpoint, where heritage and engineering engage in dialogue with the river and its natural surroundings.

Heading west, the Llémena Valley unfolds as a mosaic of fields, cliffs, and small rural settlements that convey a sense of serenity. It is a perfect setting for nature and landscape photography, with paths leading to natural viewpoints and harmonious hidden corners.

Just a few kilometres away, Girona’s Old Quarter offers an unparalleled backdrop for urban and heritage photography. Its cobbled streets, city walls, the Onyar River, and the interplay of light across façades create a succession of scenes that change with every hour of the day.

We continue towards the Crosa Volcano, the crater with the largest diameter on the Iberian Peninsula, remarkable for its gentle shape and the open landscape that surrounds it—an ideal place to conclude the journey with a calm, reflective gaze.
To the south of the region, the Les Gavarres Massif becomes one of the great photogenic settings of the Gironès. Lush forests, shaded paths, and viewpoints such as the Sanctuary of Els Àngels or the summit of Montigalar offer true natural balconies from which to contemplate the vastness of the landscape and capture its ever-changing light.

Finally, the medieval town centre of Llagostera completes the getaway with an urban setting rich in detail: narrow streets, stone façades, and squares that preserve the essence of a town historically linked to its natural surroundings.

Altogether, this creates an ideal escape to enjoy the Gironès at an unhurried pace, guided by the light and discovering a region that reveals itself, step by step, as deeply photogenic.

Below you can consult the proposed itinerary for the Photogenic Getaway:

ROUTES
Discovering the Gironès on foot allows you to appreciate its light, landscapes, and details at a relaxed pace. Highlights include the climb to the Sanctuary of Els Àngels in the Les Gavarres Massif, offering exceptional panoramic views, and the Crosa Volcano route, a gentle walk inside one of the largest craters on the peninsula. The experience is completed by itineraries through the Llémena Valley and riverside routes along the River Ter.

WHERE TO EAT
The Photogenic Getaway is also enjoyed at the table, in places where gastronomy and surroundings come together to create experiences that invite you to pause and observe. Restaurants with views, establishments integrated into the landscape, or venues located in charming historic centres allow you to complement the visual journey with local cuisine.

WHAT TO DO
To deepen your visual and natural experience of the Gironès, challenge yourself with the Gironès Summit Challenge: a new proposal that consists of reaching at least 5 of the 10 suggested peaks in the region, all of them natural viewpoints with highly photogenic landscapes. This challenge invites you to explore climbs such as Els Àngels, Puig de Cadiretes, Sant Miquel Castle, or Sant Grau, capturing the moment at the summit and sharing it with #reptecimsGironès—at your own pace and while enjoying unique panoramas.

WHERE TO STAY
To fully experience the Photogenic Getaway, the Gironès offers charming accommodations integrated into the landscape and designed for enjoying the surroundings in peace. Rural houses, unique lodgings, and characterful hotels allow you to wake up surrounded by nature or close to historic centres and photogenic settings.
Options such as Nus de Pedra in the Llémena Valley are ideal for completing your stay with a calm experience connected to the territory. And if you are travelling by camper van or motorhome, the designated areas in the Gironès allow you to explore the region with complete freedom.

EVENTS
To complete the Photogenic Getaway, the Gironès events calendar offers unique opportunities to capture the region at its most vibrant. Each season transforms the landscape and historic centres into lively settings full of light and colour.
In spring, Temps de Flors turns Girona’s Old Quarter into an open-air artistic route. Courtyards, stairways, and monuments are adorned with floral installations that create ephemeral compositions of striking visual impact—one of the most photogenic moments of the year.

A proposal to rediscover the Gironès at your own pace.
