Medinyà Castle

The first lords of Medinyà are documented in the 12th century, with Ramon Dalmau de Midiano and Artau de Medinyà. The castle is first mentioned in 1328, when Prince Joan sold its jurisdiction to Francesc de Sant Climent. In the 14th century, it belonged to the Xetmar family, and in 1698 it became royal property. By the late 19th century, it was linked to the Marquis of la Torre. The current castle consists of several buildings forming a square layout around a central courtyard. Most of its present appearance comes from Renaissance and Neoclassical renovations, transforming it into a stately manor with hardly any defensive elements. Notable features include the arcaded galleries, both interior and exterior. It is likely that the original castle grounds included the church of Sant Sadurní, rebuilt in 1763, as well as other nearby structures. Sections of the medieval wall are still preserved, especially in the southwest and south areas, along with the base of the church’s bell tower. According to historical sources, the hill near the castle once held the foundations of an original circular tower. From the upper enclosure, the keep is still preserved: a tower 7 meters in diameter with 2.5-meter-thick walls, located on the southern side of the site and flanking a Gothic entrance gate.
