Salt

A town sculpted by the Ter River

Salt has an area of about 6,5 km² and almost 30.000 inhabitants. Despite being one of the smallest municipalities in the region, it stands out for being a rich town in culture, nature, leisure and tradition.

One of the main historic-cultural elements of the town is the Monar’s Dike, an artificial canal which distributes Ter’s water to irrigate vegetable gardens and trees. Its antiquity goes back beyond the 9th century. But what left a mark in the town is the industrial process that it lived from 1850, when three important textile industries settled in Salt using its water resources. To get to know its entire story you can visit the Museu de l’Aigua de Salt  located in the old textile factory Coma Cros headquarters of the Factoria Cultural Coma Cros.

Regarding craftwork Salt is a reference in the art of basketry and for this reason it is celebrated every year the International Fair of the Basket. This fair takes place in the heart of Salt’s old quarter a charming place that preserves the warmth of the town.

Salt is also a town with a theatrical tradition it is nowadays a cultural model in Catalonia because of the importance of its Theatre and the Temporada Alta Festival. In short Salt offers a great diversity of natural spaces, heritage, cultural events and leisure. It is worth walking through the streets squares and parks along the Greenways through the Deveses de Salt and around the Ter River.
