Family Getaway

I want to share quality family time at a relaxed pace.

The Family Getaway in El Gironès offers the chance to discover the region through experiences designed to be enjoyed together, combining nature, heritage, play and learning in accessible spaces full of possibilities for both children and adults.

The route begins at the Castle of Cervià de Ter, an ideal place to introduce children to medieval heritage in a clear and relaxed way. The surroundings invite visitors to complete the experience with gentle walks through the nearby agricultural and riverside landscape, encouraging a slow and shared discovery.

Following the course of the river, the banks of the Ter become a large natural space for walking and playing. Riverside paths, springs and monumental trees transform the area into the perfect setting for exploration, free play and observing nature as a family.

Just a few kilometres away, the archaeological site of Castellum Fractum and the area of Els Sants Metges, in Sant Julià de Ramis, offer an outdoor experience where history and nature come together. This setting allows families to imagine what life was like in the early days of the region, sparking children’s curiosity as they learn through play.

The proposal continues towards the Llémena Valley, a natural environment that invites visitors to follow peaceful paths and explore open spaces that are ideal for families. In this same area, in Sant Gregori, the nativity scene of Can Roseta is a charming activity that combines tradition, creativity and family participation.

The route then reaches the Old Town of Girona, a privileged setting for awakening children’s curiosity. Streets, city walls and squares become a shared space for discovery, while the city’s museums and cultural resources allow families to learn together and understand history in an engaging and participatory way.

Very close by, the Deveses Park in Salt, one of the most distinctive riverside parks in the region, offers an ideal space to run, play and spend time in direct contact with nature, perfectly complementing the urban visit.

In Fornells de la Selva, the old railway station and the “Tren Petit” (Little Train) provide a unique experience where children can play at being train drivers and understand the importance of the railway in the region’s history in a fun and educational way.

In the heart of the Gavarres Massif, adapted routes allow families to venture into the forest at a relaxed pace, with proposals specially designed for family audiences that encourage discovering nature through play and exploration.

Finally, in Quart, a town with a strong pottery tradition, clay craftsmanship becomes an educational and creative experience that connects heritage, trade and play, closing the getaway with a hands-on activity that stimulates imagination and knowledge of the region.

Altogether, this creates an ideal proposal to enjoy the Gironès as a family over 2 or 3 days, combining nature, heritage and activities designed to share experiences and create unforgettable memories.

Below you can consult the proposed itinerary for the Family Getaway:

ROUTES

Discovering El Gironès as a family means doing so at children’s pace. Routes such as the Fountains Route, the Monumental Trees Route or The Meadows and the orchards of Salt allow you to walk, observe and play while discovering the region’s natural and landscape elements.

WHERE TO EAT

The family getaway is also experienced around the table, with a gastronomic offer adapted to all audiences, restaurants with spacious areas and peaceful surroundings where families can take a break between activities and enjoy the region’s cuisine together.

WHAT TO DO

To complete the experience, El Gironès offers specific proposals such as the family guides, structured around four different themes and designed to discover the region through play, as well as the Explorer’s Guides, with one edition dedicated to culture and another to nature.

These guides feature the Girolins, curious and adventurous characters who accompany children throughout their visits with challenges, games and questions, transforming each outing into a participatory and educational experience.

WHERE TO STAY

To fully enjoy the family getaway, accommodations such as Nus de Pedra, in Llorà, and Can Bonet, in Sant Martí Vell, stand out for offering spaces designed for families to play, relax and share quality time. There are also motorhome areas, ideal for travelling freely and adapting the stay to the family’s rhythm.

EVENTS

If you travel as a family through the Girona region, you will find a wide range of cultural and leisure proposals designed to be enjoyed together throughout the year. The calendar is filled with events aimed at family audiences that combine tradition, play, music, creativity and discovery of the territory.

In April, the programme is particularly varied. Madremanya hosts the Fira de Llegendes (Legends Fair), a day dedicated to celebrating local stories and popular traditions from the municipality and the Gavarres area. Sarrià Manga also takes place, a fair where anime, manga and Asian culture come together for all audiences. Girona celebrates its Spring Festivals with the traditional hanging of the Tarlà, displays of popular culture and street circus performances. In Salt, the Flower and Plant Fair fills the streets with stalls selling flowers, organic seedlings, medicinal and aromatic herbs, natural cosmetics and handcrafted gardening tools. In Campllong, the Regional Spring Fair turns the town into the epicentre of rural Girona, with animal competitions and demonstrations, farming activities, crafts and events for all ages.

In May, Girona hosts Ludivers, the festival of games and the cultures of imagination, with proposals that invite children and adults to play, create and imagine together. In Salt, the Textile Fair pays tribute to the workers of the town’s factories, reviving the importance that the textile sector had for 150 years. In Quart, the Clay Festival offers family days to highlight the world of pottery, with games, wheel-throwing workshops, courses, visits and a popular meal. The Remença Festival in the Llémena Valley also stands out, where the municipalities of Sant Gregori, Canet d’Adri, Sant Aniol de Finestres and Sant Martí de Llémena commemorate the history of the remença peasants who rose up against feudal lords to gain freedom. Each year, the celebration takes place in a different municipality of the valley.

June arrives full of music and tradition. Girona hosts Festivalot, the great family music festival, bringing different musical styles to adults and children so they can enjoy live concerts together. The Puppet Fair of Sant Martí Vell is also held, focused on performances with puppets; the Cork and Stopper Fair of Cassà de la Selva, which highlights the cork industry with wine tastings, concerts, demonstrations by former cork workers, children’s workshops and a market of cork-based products; and Benvinguts a Pagès (Welcome to the Farm), a weekend when farms across Catalonia open their doors to show where the food we consume comes from.

In September, Medinyà celebrates the Story Fair (Fira del Conte), an essential event to bring children’s and young adult literature closer to families. Readings, puppets, workshops, music and games turn the day into a celebration full of fantasy and creativity.

During October, Salt hosts the International Basket Fair, a reference event for basket artisans from across Europe, becoming a meeting point for knowledge exchange and craft demonstrations. In Llagostera, the Mushroom Fair offers outdoor activities such as a medieval market, craft demonstrations, exhibitions, workshops, guided tours, music and mushroom-themed gastronomic days.

Finally, between November and December, Sant Gregori celebrates the Bread and Chocolate Fair, a unique event dedicated to these two products, with stalls selling flour- and chocolate-based products, artisan displays, children’s workshops, pairings and cooking sessions. The MEG Festival also takes place in Sant Gregori, offering a selection of the best family shows of the moment, including circus, music, dance, magic, puppetry and street performances. To close the year, Sant Martí Vell organises the Family Fair, a day full of tradition and fun with family workshops, a solidarity stew, a gathering of classic tractors and stalls selling crafts and local products, all in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
